ESA was (and still is) interested in new concepts for global navigation satellite systems.
The idea of an autonomous relativistic positioning system (RPS) has not been experimentally tested yet.
In a number of experiments, we used pseudo-range data from the Sentinel-3 satellite. The data was used in an RPS simulator to retrieve the relative orbital elements of the satellite. The results show, that, starting with an initial error of 10 km in the satellite positions, it is possible to retrieve its orbit to an accuracy of ≤ 10 m, despite using noisy clock data from the Sentinel-3 and GPS satellites.
